The Philadelphia Obituary Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to honoring and memorializing victims of homicide in Philadelphia. We share their stories, interests, and impact on loved ones to humanize individuals so frequently regarded as mere statistics. Founded in 2016, The Philadelphia Obituary Project is the only online platform in the country dedicated to memorializing every homicide victim in a U.S. city. Sociological and criminological literature have documented the troubling inequality in posthumous reporting on American murder victims; the Project serves as a counterbalance, contributing to the democratization of the obituary.
