Osteopathy Australia

Overview

Osteopathy Australia is the national peak body representing the interests of osteopaths, osteopathy as a profession and consumer's right to access osteopathic services. Osteopathy Australia is a national organisation and represents osteopaths in every state and territory across Australia and a member of Allied Health Professions Australia and the Osteopathic International Alliance. Founded in 1955 in Victoria, the Australian Osteopathic Association became a national body in 1991, changing its name to Osteopathy Australia in 2014. Professional membership of Osteopathy Australia signifies a standard of professional and ethical behaviour over and above the requirements of registration. Osteopathy has been practiced for over 100 years in Australia. Our members are truly passionate about their profession and its whole-body health philosophy. As an allied health option for consumers, osteopaths understand how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a wholistic unit, and can assess, diagnose and treat patients requiring assistance with health, neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, pain and injury management. Australian osteopaths are university-trained, government-registered allied health professionals collectively treating over 80,000 Australians every week, contributing over $350 million to the Australian economy. Osteopathy is one of 14 AHPRA registered health professions in Australia. Our core work is liaising with state and federal government, all other statutory bodies regarding professional, educational, legislative and regulatory issues as well as private enterprise. We have close working relationships with the Osteopathy Board of Australia (the national registration board), the Australian and New Zealand Osteopathic Council (the university accreditor and assessor of overseas Osteopaths) and other professional health bodies through our collaborative work with Allied Health Professions Australia.
