Overview

Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program started by the U.S. Department of Energy, which challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. Odooproject is the first ever Hungarian entry to the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 competition. The multidisciplinary team consists of more than 60 students from 6 different faculties of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Odooproject is a true bottom-up initiative started with only a few people and growing into a large organization. The student team has designed and built a prefabricated, solar-powered, highly sustainable house, raising the necessary $1m funding from more than 80 sponsoring companies; while competing with university teams from all around the world. In 2012 September, the house was transported to Madrid for the competition finals, where teams had only 10 days to assemble their buildings. During the competition weeks, teams not only were to host international juries and operate their houses performing strict measurements for the different contests; they also had to present their buildings in so called "public tours" to more than 200.000 visitors that came to see the Solar Decathlon. As a result of tremendous work and dedication, the first ever Hungarian team had a successful participation, winning several competition awards as well as numerous professional awards back in Hungary.
