Overview
Teachers with a background in literacy facilitate learning in any content area. Those who choose to become certified as reading specialists are trained to diagnose and treat literacy problems; learn to develop curriculum materials and choose good text materials; and develop, implement, and analyze meaningful assessments. Literacy specialists often coach and provide professional development to faculty and coordinate literacy programs across the curriculum. They often work one-on-one with students, or in small groups, or with whole classes. Literacy specialists understand how best to work with students with special needs and students who are English language learners, as well as with students who are at all stages of literacy development. Literacy specialists work at all grade levels--including in the adult learning environment.
