The purpose of the Kansas City Chapter is to invigorate and black women to utilize their own creativity and ideas in the decision-making process with the goal of developing solutions to education, economic, political and cultural issues that adversely affect black communities in our area. HISTORY The formation of the Kansas City Chapter began in March, 2011. After two years, the Articles of Incorporation for the Kansas City Chapter was established with the State of Missouri on October 3, 2013. The chapter was legally formed as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit sister organization under the National Chapter in accordance with the national bylaws on November 7, 2013. On the same day, our chapter received its charter presented by national board member Judy Matthews on behalf of the national president, Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq. The installation was held at Bruce R. Watkins Heritage Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The Kansas City Chapter was co-founded by ten women: • Sylvya Stevenson, MPA (Founding Chair) • Tinka Barnes, MD • Stephanie Bunting • Felicia Burns-Smith, RN, BSN • Mia Harvey • Camry Ivory • Courtney Pauley • YaLonda Smith-Johnson • Neichele Stevenson • Shirley Stevenson Three years after the chapter's inception, Mayor Sylvester "Sly" James, Jr. and council members officially declared November 3 as National Congress of Black Women Day. Today, our chapter thrives through the legacy of our national founder, Shirley Chisholm, and her successor, Dr. C. Delores Tucker. Our goal is to better our community through various programs and to empower black women in Kansas City with unity, sisterhood, leadership and advocacy at the core.
