Overview
Bank deposits made with credit institutions registered in the territory of the European Union are insured by national deposit insurance institutions established in the country of foundation. All credit institutions (banks, savings cooperatives, credit cooperatives, housing savings funds) holding operating licences in Hungary are required to join and pay an entry fee and annual fees to the National Deposit Insurance Fund (NDIF), which has been at the depositors’ service since 1993. Working towards the stability of the domestic banking system, the key function of NDIF is to indemnify depositors from its accumulated assets in the event deposits are frozen. NDIF pays out the HUF equivalent of a maximum of EUR 100 thousand consolidated per person and per credit institution on the principal and interest amounts of frozen deposits to the persons entitled to compensation. A client information brochure composed under the title “A compass to deposit insurance” about the requirements of Act CCXXXVII of 2013 regulating the operation of NDIF can be downloaded from the institution’s home page (www.NDIF.hu).
