Overview

Children with a migration background can experience challenges in education. Math and science lessons are taught in Dutch, while these children are still developing their Dutch language skills. This can be discouraging since multilingual children often possess knowledge and skills in their home language(s) that they are unable to use in the classroom. How can we ensure that multilingual children feel included and can participate fully in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education in primary school? Multi-STEM is a research consortium of 31 partners including scientific, societal, educational-, and parental organisations. In this six-year research project, we aim to promote the inclusion of multilingual children in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. Multi-STEM is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and will run from 2021 – 2027.
