Overview

Mountain IDEAL is an internationally recognized destination stewardship program offered through the Walking Mountains Science Center, based in Avon, Colo. Launched in 2016 with a pilot program in Vail, programming has been developed using Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria with an emphasis on resort, rural, recreation, and getaway communities. Through a unique understanding of challenges and opportunities for destinations, Mountain IDEAL’s mission is to provide internationally recognized and accepted best practices for destination stewardship through free self-assessments, destination toolkits, and recognition programs. As of 2023, 100% of Mountain IDEAL’s certified destinations are featured on Green Destinations Top 100 Stories list, including Aspen, Breckenridge, Durango, Park City, and Vail.
