Museums, Historical Sites, and Zoos

Overview

MACAM – the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum – is a truly unique non-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving, documenting and promoting art in Lebanon since 2013. Located in Alita, Jbeil, the dynamic museum used to be a factory complex and is nestled on a hilltop overlooking the picturesque Adonis Valley and the Mediterranean sea. MACAM is a creative hub that holds art contests, workshops for kids and adults, and temporary exhibitions. It also has an adjacent art residency program. The permanent exhibition, Panorama of Sculpture in Lebanon, displays over 400 sculptures and installations by renowned artists. The exhibition presents a century of sculpting in Lebanon from Youssef Howayek, the Basbous brothers, and Hussein Madi to contemporary installation art by Nada Sehnaoui, Mario Saba, and Ghassan Ghazal. OUR RESPONSIBILITIES • The museum encourages art appreciation through educational guided tours and its unique art education program for school students, and fosters creativity through its yearly competitions and various workshops. • As a research and teaching institution, the museum revives art memory, stimulates research in its rich archives, preserves contemporary art which is ephemeral and raises awareness of Lebanese and Arab art heritage through permanent and temporary exhibitions. • The museum’s unique one level 4,000 m2 space, welcomes special-need children, the blind and visually-impaired. • The vast serene nature around the museum invites for various outdoor activities, rebooting all the senses in Art & Nature Camping with art and craft workshops. • MACAM raises awareness through arts about Human Rights and functions as a platform for social issues and as an active cultural mediator. Become part of an active and diverse cultural community, as we build together for now and for the coming generations a museum for the future. Visit us… and fall in love with MACAM!
