Overview

Jal Jyoti is a social venture which aims at enabling urban slums with light that is both affordable as well as sustainable. Most slums areas in Mumbai are densely clustered causing a large percentage of homes to have no access to windows for natural light. In addition, many households cannot afford electricity. We seek to remedy this by using a bottle of water through a corrugated tin roof to create a 60 watt light-bulb, lighting up the dark interiors of their homes. Something as simple as an old plastic bottle filled with water could mean the difference between light and darkness and uplifting the quality of life of thousands of families. An almost zero-cost solution to uplift the quality of those who either have no access to electricity or use dangerous kerosene lamps or shoddily wired light bulbs that have been known to cause fires. These basic lamps basically act as skylights - except much more powerful - and amplify the rays of the sun and act as light bulbs during the day, using no electricity at all. Our goal is to not only provide households across the country with this unique bottle light, but to also empower them with the necessary skills and technical know-how to carry forth this project on their own. The materials needed to make these bottle bulbs are easily available and are relatively low cost. By demonstrating the effectiveness of the solar bottle bulb in a few households in each community, we are certain that this model is sustainable for years to come.
