Overview

IKAC (Imam Khomeini Airport City) is located in Southern Tehran, Capital City of Islamic Republic of Iran. The main objective to carry out such a mega-development project is to convert the airport to an international “Air Hub” in the region. From site selection point of view, IKAC’s location is unique, and enjoys the geo-strategic advantages of the country – its natural and physical endowments like oil and natural gas, educated and skilled human resources and a growing domestic market. The initial site selection and design was done a long time ago, but no serious steps were taken until 1987. From then onward, the civil activities started, and in 1990 essential revisions became inevitable and therefore a new Master Plan for aviation zone was prepared by the joint venture of Iranian and Dutch consulting firm of NACO+3T. Construction of Passenger Terminal 1 commenced in 1995 and it was inaugurated officially in 2005 and received flights from since then. IKAC is owned and operated by Imam Khomeini Airport City Company. IKAC Co. has been established in 2015. IKAC has been described with a central aeronautical core consisting of 3 domestic and international terminals, 6 runways (4200m) equipped to Cat. III A, ILS and lighting system in a 3000 ha area. Since the airport cities are established along with the economic development, in the Free Zones and Special Economic Zones, the establishment of 1,500 ha of Free Trade Zone and 2,500 ha of Special Economic Zone has been forecasted for IKAC. The traffic forecast has shown 110 million passengers per year and 4 million tons of Cargo per year in the ultimate phase.
