Overview
The Illinois Innocence Project (IIP) is a not-for-profit legal clinic founded in 2001 and located within the University of Illinois Springfield. We are dedicated to releasing innocent men and women imprisoned in Illinois for crimes they did not commit. The Project advocates on behalf of this silenced population by researching and investigating claims of innocence, and providing pro bono legal representation and other assistance to prove credible claims of actual innocence. We also educate the public and students about wrongful convictions, conduct wrongful conviction training for police recruits at the Police Training Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and pursue criminal justice reforms through legislation in the Illinois General Assembly.
