Overview
The scope of Geotechnical Engineering has expanded significantly in the last 30 years, still, many students are not exposed to the wide coverage of current trends and exciting professional/teaching/research opportunities in geotechnical engineering. To motivate the students, to give them exposure to different careers and opportunities in this area, and also to develop leadership skills among the students, the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) has advised every local chapter to establish a student chapter. In response to that IGS Silchar Chapter, headed by Prof. A. K. Dey took the initiative to form a student chapter with the PG, UG students, and PhD scholars of the Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Silchar. IGS Silchar Student Chapter was inaugurated on 15th of March, 2019 under the patronage of Dr. G. L. Sivakumar Babu, President IGS and Prof. J. T. Sahu, Hon'y Secretary IGS in the presence of Prof. Sivaji Bandopadhyay, Director of NIT Silchar, on the inaugural day of 7th Indian Young Geotechnical Engineer's Conference held at NITS.
