Shelter is a basic need. Governments have a role to perform in its provision and by creating an enabling environment. Many African countries have relegated this responsibility to the private sector. The private sector have succeeded in providing houses for the ruling classes, excluding the majority NEED ing Affordable housing. The Social Housing model in Europe will be difficult to replicate in African States without a welfare benefit system, Housing Advocacy is promoting the concept of Housing Cooperatives. Through the various seminars and workshops, Housing Advocacy is establishing the concept of Housing Cooperatives in West Africa. The process is challenging and structurally difficult. The big question remains with the identification of who is the housing cooperative model suitable for?. Our association with Social Housing Foundation in South Africa, provides us with a n answer. We are assisting the Nigeria House of Assembly to prepare the first housing bill for the next session. This will be linked to regeneration and employment initiatives.
