Global Carbon Council

Overview

The Global Carbon Council (GCC) is the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region’s first voluntary carbon offsetting program. GCC aims to contribute to a vision of a sustainable and low-carbon world economy. Our Program receives GHG emission-reduction projects from the entire world, although it places special emphasis on low-carbon development in the MENA region, which has largely remained under-represented in carbon markets. We help catalyze climate action on the ground, while ensuring that project construction and operations do not cause any net-harm to the environment and society and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The GCC program has been approved by CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) and ICROA (International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance). GCC projects cover a diverse range of sectors, including renewable energy (such as wind and hydroelectric projects), Methane Avoidance and others. Emission reductions certified by our program are eligible to be issued as ACCs (Approved Carbon Credits), with one ACC representing one metric ton of GHG emissions reduced, avoided or removed from the atmosphere. GCC facilitates the purchase of Approved Carbon Credits by corporations and governments through a marketplace for buyers and sellers of carbon credits to catalyze climate action. By using the carbon markets, entities neutralize, or offset, their emissions by retiring carbon credits generated by projects that are reducing GHG emissions elsewhere. Of course, it is critical to ensure, or verify, that the emission reductions generated by these projects are actually occurring. This is the work of the GCC Program – to ensure the credibility of emission reduction projects, while reducing the negative impacts on environment and society and demonstrating contribution to UN SDGs. GCC expects to issue 10 Million+ ACCs in 2021!
