Either they're thinking about retiring to some extent in the next 5-10 years but they are worried that they won't have enough and are concerned time is running out, so they want to make sure they are doing sensible things with their money now. Or they really want to retire sooner but either don't think they can afford to or they are afraid they will make decisions that they may later regret. They typically tell me that freedom and financial security are really important to them and they want to make sure they have both, forever.
