Overview

Established in 1970, the Faculty of Law set to develop both legal capacity and social imagination across the Caribbean. Fifty years later, and we have achieved many of our goals. Cave Hill is a powerful symbol of the promise of regional integration. As the only Caribbean Faculty of Law from its inception in 1970 until 2012 – when sister Faculties were established at Mona and St Augustine –Cave Hill has been central in developing a Caribbean legal identity and Caribbean-specific jurisprudence. By making the teaching and promotion of Caribbean law and Caribbean legal perspectives on global issues central to what it does, we educate our students about and empower our graduates with confidence and faith in the validity of the Caribbean experience. Cave Hill is also an expression of the excellence that Caribbean peoples acting together can achieve. Our graduates occupy some of the highest judicial and political offices in the region and are at the forefront of moulding and reforming our colonial legal heritage to better respond to the challenges of life in a post-colonial, modern Caribbean. We have always viewed advancement of regional development and the communication of the unique Caribbean identity as central to our mandate as a tertiary educational institution. Through both our teaching and research, we have made timeless contributions to the character of Caribbean legal frameworks. In this year of our fiftieth anniversary, we look not to the past but to our future, and we commit to placing regional priorities at the centre of the education we provide and the research we carry out. On this page, we showcase activities, commentaries, and aspirations from the Cave Hill Faculty of Law. We invite alumni and students, we invite practitioners and professionals to help us advance the development of law throughout the Caribbean.
