Overview

The Disaster Management Institute of Southern Africa (DMISA) is the non-profit professional association and community of practice for Disaster Management in Southern Africa and the SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) approved professional body for Disaster Management in South Africa. DMISA creates learning, networking, alignment and development opportunities for its members, support the professionalisation of the discipline, and administers the SAQA approved professional designations Disaster Management Technician (DMT); Disaster Management Associate (DMA); Disaster Management Practitioner (DMPc) and Disaster Management Professional (PrDM) as well as the recognition of prior learning and the continuous professional development linked to these designations. DMISA is governed by a Council elected from its membership. The DMISA Council in turn elects a President and Executive Committee that is responsible for the leadership and day-to-day steering of the Institute. Save for one paid administrator, DMISA is a purely volunteer organisation. DMISA presents learning opportunities such as conferences and seminars, including an annual Disaster Risk Reduction conference and seminars organised by the regions of DMISA.
