Religious Institutions

Overview

The Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn spans an area of 88,000 km² with our communities and ministries geographically spread across various regional (country and coastal) areas of New South Wales as well as encompassing the entirety of the Australian Capital Territory. We have 51 parishes (17 in the ACT, and 34 in NSW) divided across four deaneries, with 41 active diocesan and religious-order priests who serve these centres of faith. Since 2013, the Archdiocese has been led by Archbishop Christopher Prowse. The Archbishop's Office for Evangelisation which supports and animates the pastoral and missionary outreach of the Archdiocese is adjacent to the Cathedral of St Christopher located in the suburb of Forrest, and only a short distance from the Australian Parliamentary Zone. There are some 163,000 Catholics in the Archdiocese, and we provide education to approximately 21,000 students in 56 Catholic Schools, as well as having the Signadou campus of Australian Catholic University situated in North Canberra. There are also three hospitals and nine Aged Care Homes, as well as a numerous social welfare programs, outreaches, and initiatives that are run by Catholic organisations.
