Overview

Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital's mission is to conserve, protect and ensure positive welfare outcomes for Australian wildlife through treatment, rehabilitation, research and education. We are no ordinary hospital. The Australian bushfire crisis of the summer of 2019-2020 devastated Australian flora and fauna, killing over one billion native animals. Whole populations were decimated, often because specialist wildlife rescue and medical care facilities were inundated with patients or simply not available. Thanks to dedicated sponsors, crowdfunding and teamwork, our customised semi-trailer is built to facilitate an immediate response to wildlife in crisis anywhere in Australia. This self-contained mobile hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and is based at our 100 acres of gifted land on Ewingsdale Road in Byron Shire. Led by CEO Dr Stephen Van Mil, a veterinarian, filmmaker and wildlife conservationist, Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is a not-for-profit organisation well-placed to become Australia's pre-eminent wildlife treatment, rehabilitation and conservation hub. Our sole purpose is #forthewildlife - we aim to bridge a significant gap in specialist care and facilities for treatment and rehabilitation and build positive relationships with wildlife veterinarians, rescuers, carers and organisations.
