Overview

Humanity faces unprecedented challenges in climate change caused by natural resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, unsustainable waste management, and deforestation. These together with the growing world population threatens future food security. BugEra (Bugheera) - Insect Biotechnology for a Sustainable Future is an Israeli-based start-up originating from Ben-Gurion University Life Science Department, specializing in insect genetic engineering. BugEra develops and produces novel Black Soldier Fly (BSF) strains. BSF is a magnificent and harmless insect with unique biological traits that contribute to solving all the above challenges and closing circular economy loops by recycling organic waste into valuable products – protein and oil used today for the animal, fish, and pet feed. We improve and increase the fly's natural traits by introducing genetic editing and modifications resulting in the patent-pending Modified Black Soldier Fly (M-BSF) Platform. The M-BSF Platform gives rise to a novel array of safe and sustainable bi-products for new potential markets and revenue streams for the BSF industry. BugEra's first product/strain double and more the larvea-oil volume, without negatively altering the protein or oil, thus solving a key economic barrier that has until now limited BSF from serving the increasing demand for lipids for Renewable Fuels (Biodiesel, Renewable Diesel, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel ). It is estimated that BugEra's BSF strain oil will be among the most cost-effective and sustainable biomass to renewable fuels generating far more carbon credits than fuels produced from crop oils, enabling the expansion of BSF farming into a huge market and introducing new circular economy opportunities. BugEra graduated from 2 accelerators, is backed by a USA-based strategic investor, Milltrust International Group a global leading IMPACT fund, JBI Ventures, and is supported by the Israeli Innovation Authority. *contact@bugera-bio.tech*
