Overview

In a world teeming with so much information, how can we separate ourselves from the passive masses, stand up, and be a more discerning citizen? Can we stand against being victimized by the propagation of fake news? To be more objective about the information that splashes everywhere, that hungers for our attention, that thirsts for our precious “Yes” and “No”. Can we? We’re now living in a highly connected world, thanks to the rise and development of internet and social media. Along with this rise is the commoditization of information. But more important than before, it has now become a source of power, and has now morphed into a real weapon. But just like any other power, the principled and good-hearted ones will, no doubt, use it for the good of the many, and their treacherous opposites will utilize it extensively to promote their vested interests and ambitions, at the expense of the many. Information is much like a huge wave, moving and throwing fishes wherever it pleases, while the hapless little fishes of the sea are powerless with the huge waves, tossed around and thrown in the sea all day long, without any resistance. Are the passive citizens of the world much like the same? Unlike the big whales, they can resist the tidal forces of the waves, and at times, they create the waves themselves, isn’t it fascinating? What if we could act like big whales in the sea of information that we are in right now? That idea came in 2017 when we were gathered by the U.S Embassy Manila to attend a New Media Workshop. Since then, we have committed to addressing fake news and disinformation by organizing events that would unify the voices of different individuals and organizations that echo the same mission.
