Boundary Waters Advisory Committee

Non-profit Organizations

Overview

The Boundary Waters Advisory Committee (BWAC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving trails in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of the Superior National Forest. Our current, most prominent project is the Revitalization of the Powwow Hiking Trail. The BWAC organization embarked on this journey after the 2011 Pagami Creek Megafire. Since then, thousands and thousands of trees fell to block the trail, and at the same time jack pines grew prolifically. For every tree that fell in the forest, probably 100 jack pines sprouted and threatened to forever choke the path. But BWAC was able to re-open the trail in 2019, it is hikable once again! We removed the tree falls from the trail and cut the jackpines from the trail corridor. Thank you to all the volunteers and the Forest Service staff that cooperated in this effort. In addition to clearing the Powwow Trail, BWAC has completed a new Powwow Trail Hiker Guide, launched a comprehensive club website, and the BWAC Duluth Chapter continues to attract new volunteers. Our hope is that you will join BWAC to make the historic Powwow Trail even better.
