Overview
For more than 100 years, the American Board of Ophthalmology has been an independent advocate for excellence in eye and vision care. Certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology helps physicians demonstrate to patients and peers a high level of knowledge, skills, and experience in their profession. Since 1916, more than 30,000 ophthalmologists in the United States have voluntarily sought the distinction of board certification--driven by professional pride and a passion for practicing better medicine. The Board's strategic priorities and professional standards are established by physician-directors who hail from hospitals, clinics, and private practices around the country. They are assisted by three public directors who represent the patient voice. The standards and assessments that are the foundation of Board Certification are developed by a volunteer network of more than 600 distinguished subject matter experts in comprehensive and subspecialty areas of ophthalmology.
