Overview

Ropa started this podcast because through her experience living in Germany for 5 years, she realized that the few times stories about the African continent and its people are told, they are told from a European perspective. The problem with this, is that this euro-centric view of the continent often pushes forward the same single, tired narrative of poverty and corruption on the African continent. Ropa's goal was to begin to saturate the podcasting landscape with stories of African people, told by the African people themselves. She thoroughly believes in the power of storytelling to start conversations, change perceptions, and challenge mindsets. The hope is that with each story told on this podcast, the diversity and multidimensionality of African people from different countries is shown. Each episode has a different guest or group of guests. The interview is designed to understand the guest along 4 themes - - Identity(who they are) - Background (where they have been) - People (which relationships have shaped them) - Purpose (where they are going) The guests are from different countries, with different professions, passions, sexual orientations, religions, nationalities and so on. The only things they have in common, is that they are of African descent (born to at least one African parent), and are living in Europe. As far as documenting history goes, this podcast also hopes to create a repository of interviews that will one day be able to serve as first hand accounts of the Afro diasporan experience. The emphasis will always be on stories, not statistics, and the perspective will always be that of the owner of the story, and not anyone else. By doing so, this library of interviews will be unadulterated, unfiltered, and undoctored.
