Overview

The African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP) is a country-led, public-private development partnership between the Government of Botswana, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Merck & Co. Inc. / The Merck Company Foundation. ACHAP was established in 2000 to enhance and support Botswana’s national HIV/AIDS response through a comprehensive approach across the spectrum of prevention, treatment, care and support through 2009. As part of the partnership, each Foundation has committed 56.5 million USD and Merck in addition is donating its two antiretroviral medicines, Crixivan® and Stocrin® for use in the national ARV program as needed for the duration of the partnership. ACHAP support to the Government of Botswana is aligned to and supports four of the five key Goals outlined in the National Strategic Framework (NSF) for HIV/AIDS 2003 – 2009.
