MIP Group Leader

The MIP is part of the US-based Innocence Network and is one of only 13 approved projects in the network. The project aims to help the wrongfully convicted with the end goal of filing an application with the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) to prove miscarriage of justice. As a group, we review documents, consult with lawyers and experts, and engage with clients and witnesses under the guidance of staff and lawyers. As a group leader, I serve as a bridge between my group and the staff, ensure steady progress is being made, and report all updates in our assigned case to the relevant staff.

I also met many of the trainees, who discussed the pillars of insurance: wording, coverage, defence, and recovery as well as what one should expect to do as an insurance lawyer. I participated in a workshop exercise relating to profitability, corporate social responsibility, and marketing. I also had the opportunity to meet Michael Burns, a partner at the firm who, asides from explaining the key skills necessary for adapting to the fast-paced environment of commercial law, highlighted the major advancements to employment law since he first practised law. During the Kingsley Napley open day, I got to hear about the firm's ethos, recruitment criteria, and work from trainees across various departments. The panelists also gave invaluable advice about choosing which area of law to pursue. Most memorably, Shannet Thompson's, a senior partner, legal experiences in the education and health sector has given me insight on what to expect from the practice area. Clifford Chance’s “Ready, Set, Law” is a 7-hour, self-paced virtual work experience programme that showcases the complexities of new financial technology, such as cryptocurrency, in the context of commercial law. The programme touches down on blockchain technology and crypto assets, sustainable lending and sustainability-linked loans, and the volatility of social media marketing.
