My learning and experiences in the in-lab environment had been greatly accelerated and improved. Under the guidance and supervision of his PhD students, Arlene, Adam, Parth, Mara and Xavier, I was able to operate the more complex machine and learn new techniques in the synthesis of organic chemistry. Dr Baumann’s work on flow chemistry is new, exciting and innovative as it opens a whole new field in terms of the synthesis process and in a more efficient manner. Flow chemistry brings a whole new dimension of benefits which includes factors like in-line purifications, creating ideal conditions for photochemistry, huge improvements in safety through miniaturisation, higher yield product, efficient mixing and dissipation of heat and others. From this summer internship, I was able to extract and improve some key skills such as operating the complex machine, understanding the principles behind flow chemistry and other organic synthesis, organisation skills, analytical skills, time management and meticulous attention to detail.
