Zaina delivered a fantastic presentation to students at an Industrial Pharmacy Careers Panel event at The University of Manchester. Her support and advice had a huge impact on the students who attended and 100% agreed with the statements: ‘I feel motivated to take action regarding my career.’ ‘Talking to alumni was beneficial.’ ‘I enjoyed the event.’ ‘I would recommend the event to others.’ Zaina was a pleasure to work with and I hope to see her at future events.

Christine Mwangi

I remember Zaina as a first year Pharmacy Student and I could see her passion and ambition to excel in the program. I am so proud to watch her grow academically, professionally and personally. I am excited at all the great things she has and WILL accomplish and it is my hope to cheer her on every step of the way. I wish her the best in her pre-registration post at AstraZeneca and beyond!

    • Brand Ambassador
      • Aug 2013 - Aug 2015

In light of their 25-year anniversary this year, the NCUK is planning a ‘re-launch’ campaign. To achieve their agenda, they require Brand Ambassadors. This role involved set tasks including writing blog posts for their website. The posts covered various topics, centered around my experience as an international student in the United Kingdom. These aimed to provide guidance to students embarking on their first year at university. The role instilled a sense of self-awareness in me, in that I looked retrospectively at decisions I have made, and the consequences that followed. Therefore, in writing about my experiences, I learnt more about myself, how I function as an individual, my strengths and my weaknesses.

    • PASS Co-ordinator
      • May 2013 - May 2014

Following my year as a PASS leader, I was recommended for the role of Student Coordinator for the Pharmacy PASS Scheme. My job involved preparation of worksheets to be used in the study sessions, and distribution to Leaders and first year students. This demanded organisation and good time-management. I helped facilitate Debrief sessions that run every other week, where Leaders discussed any problems faced and shared ideas to improve sessions. I also worked in conjunction with lecturers to ensure that the content covered in the study sessions complemented the students' learning.

    • Peer Mentor
      • Sep 2012 - Jun 2013

This is a voluntary role that involved providing guidance to first year students with regard to various aspects of university life.

    • PASS Leader
      • Sep 2012 - Jun 2013

I undertook eleven hours of training in order to qualify as a Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) leader. The job was voluntary and required facilitation of timetabled study sessions for first year students. The sessions took place fortnightly. Leaders were also expected to attend debrief sessions, every two weeks, to discuss how sessions were proceeding, share ideas and resolve any problems.

    • School Board Representative
      • Sep 2011 - Jun 2013

I was one of four student representatives on the School of Pharmacy Board. The role involved attendance of all School Board meetings, presentation of any concerns or queries on behalf of my course-mates to academic staff, and passing on feedback from staff to my course-mates.

The areas covered in my voluntary role included: filling in the prescription-only book, filling in controlled drugs records, observation of counter- prescribing, dispensing and labelling of medication. I gained first-hand experience as to what working in community pharmacy in the United Kingdom entails. The placement reinforced my theoretical knowledge regarding minor ailments. I learnt the importance of each team member in effective delivery of health care services. I lent a helping hand wherever needed, thus learnt how to adapt and be flexible as situations demand, within accepted standards.
