Pakistan has increased the focus on trade with regional markets and the new policies and strategies to achieve this objective developed by the FBR and the Ministry of Commerce include improving border crossing point infrastructure, equipment and procedures to reduce cargo dwell time and increase throughput. The improved border crossing points are part of the strategy to develop more efficient transport corridors. The benefits to traders and manufacturers in Pakistan is to lower their transaction costs and give them more predictable export and import supply chains so they can get products to regional markets faster; this should help increase exports. Current border crossing points are not fit for purpose as they can not process the current volumes of export, import and transit cargo and pedestrians. Cargo dwell times are long and commercial trucks and pedestrians suffer long queue waiting times often in challenging climatic environments. The current BCP's were not designed to process the current levels of cargo and they were not designed as part of a trade facilitation solution. The FBR ITTMS objectives include reducing cargo dwell times and increasing throughput as part of a strategy to get better road and rail connectivity with neighboring trading partners and with Central Asia. The ADB TA-8405 PAK project objectives match the ITTMS objectives because the three improved road border crossing points will serve as good practice examples for Pakistan as a result of new infrastructure, new equipment, new computer technology, improved processes and good practice design and layout shall reduce cargo dwell times, increase throughput and improve the image for Pakistan. The Asian Development Bank has allocated $50-100 million for the project which is approved in the 3rd quarter 2014 as a Project Preparation grant to the Federal Board of Revenue. The construction of Torkham & Chaman BCP's is awarded to National Logistic Cell. NLC is preparing construction drawings. Show less

Kabul City is one of the fast growing cities in Asia since establishment of new government. The population has exceeded vastly from 2002 to 2006. It is expected that the population will increase to 6.5 Million in 2025 and the existing infrastructure and public facilities of Kabul doesn’t have that much capacity to supply the required demand so the government initiated the need for developing a new city. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) prepared the Master Plan Study on Kabul Metropolitan Area (KMA) Development in 2009. The Kabul New City was planned as a part of KMA development. The Master Plan of Kabul New City (KNC) has already been endorsed by the Afghan Cabinet of Ministers. JICA is also supporting the capacity development (CD) of DCDA under the Technical Cooperation Project on Promotion of the Kabul Metropolitan Area (KMA) Development. As an output of CD the Structure Plan of the Phase 1 Development Area was prepared. DCDA is currently working on the implementation procedures of the KNC. As a greenery concept of the KNC Master Plan, the city has a Green belt, a Central Park, hierarchical Parks (Block Parks, Neighborhood Parks, Community Parks and Principle Parks) and the Gully Streams are kept with Green Buffers in order to create a green network and natural environment. To enhance this concept further there is a need for preparation of the Master Plan for Greenery to develop strategies for the green development, implementation methodologies, maintenance and operation and the types of plants suitable for the climate and weather condition of KNC. As part of this assignment the concept development plan of the Central Park also should be done. The Green Belt is approximately 4000 ha surrounding the city and the Central Park is around 1,300 ha. The remaining hierarchical Parks range from 0.1 ha to 100 ha. Show less

In 2010 the Afghanistan Investment Climate Facility (AICF) - HARAKAT funded a project called the Afghanistan Building Code (ABC). The Afghan National Standard Authority (ANSA) acted as the project implementer and led the process of the building codes development in four major areas of planning and design that included: Urban Development Codes, Architectural Codes, Structural Codes, Highway, Street and Bridge Design Codes. The building codes resulted from this work has been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Afghanistan. In light of the need for the implementation of the building codes, our report aims to support the dissemination of the codes by engaging the target community of industry leaders, engineers, architects and other professional stakeholders in the assessment process. The findings resulting from this assessment report will guide training efforts for the use of the codes for new engineers and architects entering the profession. Show less

City District Government of Lahore was directed by the Chief Minister to develop a comprehensive strategy for conservation of The Mall Road Lahore; a British colonial Boulevard developed in mid 19th Century. National College of Arts was asked to support; Prof. Sajjad Kausar recommended me to handle the project on personal level. I worked on the project and incrementally presented the project to a steering committee comprises of Justice Rtd. Ramday, Prof. Salima Hashmi, Dr. Aijaz Anwar, Journalist Iftikhar Ahmad, Journalist Suhail Waraich, Arch. Nayyar Ali Dada DCO Lahore and other civil society members. I identified 05 buildings in first phase to be documented and conserved. The buildings were: Left Over part of Shahdin Manzil, Ghulam Rasool Building (Feroz Sons), Bawa Dinga Sing Building, Ahmad Mansion (Luxmi Mansion) and General Insurance Building (Narrsangdas Building). In addition; I proposed a heritage resource center at Jinnah Hall which will have all documents, maps, drawings, photographs and relevant documents of all historical buildings in Lahore at first phase. To achieve this; I started scanning the approval maps (Submission Drawings) of all these buildings. The project is now pending and awaiting approval as British Council in partnership with Urban Unit plans to pursue it. Show less
