    • Assistant Unit Manager
      • May 2011 - Apr 2014

I work directly with a mix of young males who are dealing with conduct disorder problems as well as mental health problems. I am required to know how the residents in my care respond to different intervention styles and I am also to have an understanding of the different diagnoses that each of the residents have. I encourage residents to follow daily structure while on the unit. I help residents in our care learn new coping skills, appropriate behaviors for being out in the community, as well as appropriate ways to interact with peers and staff. I also help teach life skills such as practicing good hygiene and completing chores on a regular basis. Not only do I work directly with the residents on my unit, I need to be able to have an understanding of the other units throughout the building because the other units has residents with different diagnoses than the residents on my unit. As a staff on the unit, I am there for the residents. I am the first person the resident comes to when they need help or need to talk. As the Assistant Unit Manager, I have the added responsibilities of completing extra tasks for the unit and throughout the building, such as planning the activity calendar for the unit, as well as to order supplies for the office and clothing and hygiene supplies for the residents. I also make sure the unit is clean and safe for the residents in our care on a weekly basis. If needed, I also help with training new hires on my unit. I also have assisted in attending quarterly meetings to discuss a residents progress while in our care. I have also had the experience of working directly with the crisis staff in the building. Other duties included scheduling appointments and working on projects delegated to me by the program associates or the associate Deans in the office, which included filing paperwork as well. In the Dean of Student Affairs office, students come in to discuss personal issues they may be going through along with school. As the student assistant, I acted as the "front line", having to constantly keep a professional attitude with students who came in or parents who called and had questions. I also needed constantly practice confidentiality when it came to dealing with students' files. Show less
