Working with Professor Dominic Parker, I researched the effects of U.S. economic sanctions on China's human rights abuses in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Over the course of the summer, I compiled a literature review, developed an empirical model to test the efficacy of trade sanctions and the January 2021 cotton import ban, and finally used public import/export spreadsheets to validate the model. The project was funded by a $2500 grant from the UW-Madison Honors Program.
