Groton, Connecticut In this job, I conducted original research and supported colleagues’ climate mitigation projects with technical support. As part of my role, I developed geographic data portal enabling local policy makers and stakeholders to conduct risk-based resilience planning and trade-off analyses. Building off of innovative economics research, I created a modular Monte Carlo simulation model to evaluate the cost effectiveness and present value of proposed coastal defense infrastructure projects. Building off of innovative economics research, I created a modular Monte Carlo simulation model to evaluate the cost effectiveness and present value of proposed coastal defense infrastructure projects. I employed cognitive science principles to make scientific findings more accessible to stakeholders. Finally, as a fun and rewarding side project, I designed a low cost teaching tool that combines historical ideas (a slide rule) and modern technology (parametric design) to give policymakers a physical intuition for the concept of storm frequency shift. I managed to automate some of this workload by developing ad hoc VBA scripts to work faster and more efficiently. I also wrote press releases on gubernatorial appointments.

Pachuca de Soto Area, Mexico During this summer program in Hidalgo, Mexico, I worked in a leadership role on a social service consulting team with both American and Mexican students. We investigated the decline of an endangered freshwater shellfish that was important to an indigenous mountain community, conducting both sociological surveys and direct water quality testing. We developed a conservation plan with input from dozens of stakeholders, and identified implementation bottlenecks and sources of funding. Raleigh, NC This internship, with a mechanical engineering team designing smart gas meters, gave me a window into engineering practices in commercial companies. Under the supervision of experienced engineers, I built a testbed to evaluate the reliability of a prototype for a innovative magnetic coupling. I also converted old 2D part drawings into 3D models to support Sensus’ Product Lifecycle Management transformation effort.
