Before serving with Zach I had never "looked up to" someone younger than me. That changed by the time his term had ended, as I not only saw my colleagues differently but also significantly changed my own leadership style as a result of Zach's example. Zach first appointed me to the Student Senate in April of 2006. As a former college dropout I was one of the oldest Senators in the group, and was "stuck in my ways" in terms of how I thought things should be done. I was opinionated, brusque, and firmly believed in beating my opponents to death with my views until they conceded that I was right all along. That was never Zach's personality, even as President of our organization. He has an uncanny skill at getting people to say what's on their minds, and then working with them to find ways to address the "issues behind the issues" so everyone's concerns are resolved amicably. When the occasional problem arose that couldn't be addressed by a collaborative approach, Zach did what every good President must: gather what information is available, let others weigh in as they want, and make a decision. His collaborative-but-still-decisive approach was incredibly effective in the Student Senate, where the group's ability to promote change is entirely dependent on how smoothly it operates and how persuasive it can be with University administrators. [It also frustrated the dickens out of me when I was on the losing end of an issue, because I the process was ethical and fair and I still lost occasionally.] Zach took my opinion into consideration whenever I wanted to offer it, and even when we disagreed I never felt disrespected. It was an honor to serve with him, and when I followed in his footsteps as President I made sure to mellow out and borrow some of his same style. He'll be an asset to any organization he joins, especially if it comes to building consensus among a wide variety of people.
