Because it is my distinct honor and privilege to have known Yvonne Flack throughout her whole life, I am confident in my judgment when I recommend her for whatever work she is willing to undertake. Her abilities are circumscribed only by her preferences. I am confident that she will accomplish any project she attempts. I am biased in her favor because of a healthy familiar relationship lasting more than the 27 years she has lived — but I do NOT believe that what I acknowledge to be my bias is misplaced. Instead, I recommend to anyone who questions this assessment to review her academic career, carefully, bearing in mind that for every achievement she acknowledges, she keeps a number to herself. She is an athlete who once swam competitively for her high school. She is an equestrian versed on both English and Western riding, although she does not compete in events. She is a student of music, a very fine actress, an experienced director of stage productions and a careful observer of the world. She is an honest woman, generous and loyal to those she befriends. She is a spouse who continuously lends her support to the creative efforts of her teacher-musician husband. She is a remarkable family member who is sincerely engaged in what interests those around her. She never forgets her loved ones. But she is a self-disciplined academic with a goal (to which she is true) that includes but transcends basic competence. She reads. She questions. She studies. She analyzes. She does what it takes to acquire knowledge. This young woman is working to complete her PhD dissertation (on sometimes interpretive foreign productions of Shakespeare’s plays) soon, possibly in the autumn of 2011. I expect it to be a publishable work. There is no doubt in my mind that it will be worth reading. I am convinced that she will achieve the level of excellence in it that she has achieved in every one of her multitude of previous efforts, for which her many honors attest.
