  PT RPN was established through a transformation process from the Indonesian Plantation Research Institute (LRPI), consisting of research institutions that have existed since the colonial era. This institute conducts research on commercial commodities cultivated by plantation companies, namely oil palm, rubber, cocoa, coffee, tea, quinine and sugar. The oldest research institute is the sugar research institute in Pasuruan, East Java, which was founded in 1887, so it is currently 136 years old. With the nationalization of foreign plantation companies in 1957, the Indonesian government took over the ownership of these foreign plantation companies along with the research institutions within them. As a result of the incomplete nationalization process, this research institution did not have a clear status and often experienced changes in management before being designated as PT RPN.
