  I was awarded the fellowship to undertake an independent research project in the humanities this summer. My project looks at the embroidered textiles of the Miao people, a minority ethnic group from Southwest China. The goal of my project is to consider what these collections and exhibitions reveal about the construction of a Miao identity in the context of minority politics, the identity politics that concerns minority nationalities in China.

  I worked on various collection management projects like photogrammetry, storage management, provenance research, cataloging, and label-writing under the supervision of the Keeper of Asian Section at the museum. The main project I did was cataloging and researching Chinese textiles, specifically a small collection of minority textiles at the museum.   I worked under the supervision of an alumna at the museum for a week. I helped remount and re-catalogue some ethnographic materials on display in the main gallery. Under the instructions of the curator, I conducted research on the Chinese cannery workers in Haines and rewrote labels for the associated objects in the collection. I also learned about the responsibilities of a museum director by shadowing the alumna during staff and board meetings. I worked under the supervision of an alumna at the museum for a week. I translated exhibition plans and speeches of panelists and proofread the publications. With two other interns, I conducted research on the history of the Royal Asiatic Society in Shanghai for one of the panel discussions. I also interviewed art historians and museum curators for the documentary of the forum. As the education department intern, I helped organize the first “Art and Science” academic forum at the museum.
