Jaime Anne Earnest

I've had the pleasure of encountering Yulia's work in two organisational projects at the University of Glasgow. Her web design work for the GIST added a fresh, well-designed, and engaging face to the activities of science communication the magazine is involved in. I also worked with Yulia on a professional development program, and was impressed by her novel use of the materials available to us to complete the desired deliverable on a timeline. She's personable, resourceful, and clever, and would make an excellent addition to any team.

The GIST is a student-led science magazine that aims to communicate science to a wider audience, including non-scientists and non-specialists. In addition, I have done specialist editing for Psychology & Neuroscience, as well as written my own pieces. Getting involved with theGIST improved my time-management skills, as I have to split time between my research and the magazine. Working at theGIST also involves a lot of collaboration and teamwork - I have to be considerate of the ideas of others, but also confident to express my own opinion when I feel a particular action would be best for the Society. We have recently published our fourth issue, and the website attracts around 120 users per day. the-gist.org

I am responsible for maintaining theGIST website. When I started the role, I redesigned the site, which involved me teaching myself HTML and CSS in my spare time. I am also keen to familiarise myself more with PHP and Javascript. The role has required independent learning and adapting my previous knowledge of programming to an unfamiliar situation.

As part of my PhD, I did a 3-month internship at the Glasgow Science Centre, in order to develop my science communication skills. I helped develop an exhibit aimed at young people about careers in science. My task was multidisciplinary and involved research, science communication, evaluation, teamwork, graphic design and creative skills to generate new ideas. I helped develop an exhibit aimed at young people about careers in science. My task was multidisciplinary and involved research, science communication, evaluation, teamwork, graphic design and creative skills to generate new ideas. My ability to work efficiently and multi-task meant that tasks were finished quickly and the project was able to meet its deadline. Working on so many different things throughout the internship meant that I had to be adaptable, and quickly acquire new skills where needed. I regularly assessed my productivity and the way the project was progressing, taking the initiative when needed, asking for help or finding out how to complete various tasks independently. For example, when the clients mentioned they wanted the videos to have subtitles, I took the lead in this task and transcribed the videos, found open-source video-editing software and taught myself how to embed subtitles. This was not something the staff at the Science Centre had done before, so my ability to work independently and find novel solutions to problems was crucial here. Many times, when more senior members of my team were away, I also had to exercise leadership and liaise with the software developers myself. In the end, we were able to complete the exhibit successfully and on time. The final exhibit consists of three parts: • infowall - where visitors can view information relating to different careers on an interactive touchscreen • iPad game - where visitors can go through a series of tests and games to assess their personality and suitable careers • magic mirror - an interactive exhibit where visitors can "try on" virtual outfits related to different careers, such as an astronaut or a deep sea diver. I worked here as a work experience student. I designed posters, business cards, etc using Corel Draw. I also served customers at the till and performed printing, photocopying and laminating. I learned many aspects of graphic design and also about web design during my time here. As this was only a two-week placement, I had to learn fast and take the initiative in teaching myself new skills as the staff were often busy with their own work. At the end of the placement, two posters I… Show more I worked here as a work experience student. I designed posters, business cards, etc using Corel Draw.
