This program provides immediate crisis counseling to anyone in need, from those who are actively suicidal to those who are just feeling lonely. Required six weeks of online training, followed by several week of close supervised conversations with distressed texters. Minimum required hours per week are four, with a 200 hour/year commitment. I have found this experience to be incredibly rewarding, both with the immediate gratification of being able to help those in need, along with much improved… Show more This program provides immediate crisis counseling to anyone in need, from those who are actively suicidal to those who are just feeling lonely. My research at the University of Rochester Medical Center focuses on Domestic Violence victims. I am involved in several projects, including running a court-based project to evaluate the effectiveness of having a mental health provider at family court, evaluating the training for a domestic violence and suicide hotline in Texas, and determining whether bruising is less taken into account for darker skinned women in domestic violence cases. My job entails transcribing, deidentifying, coding… Show more My research at the University of Rochester Medical Center focuses on Domestic Violence victims. My time with the Hooper Lab was spent investigating ways to induce a Th1 type response intracranially through an attenuated cell line of gliobastoma multiforme (GBM) in order to treat this 100% fatal disease. Became proficient in several laboratory techniques, including growing and splitting of cells, intracranial and superficial injections into mice, euthanizing of mice through trans-cardial perfusion, and using ELISA methods to analyze results. Worked at Martin Luther King Jr. School #9 for the school year. Assisted in five separate classrooms, grades K-3. Activities included tutoring basic math, reading and writing, as well as one on one anger management/communication skills. By working with a diverse group of youths from various socioeconomic backgrounds, I was able to gain a better understanding of why many youths drop out of school in the Rochester School District. Facilitated several small group workshops each week, where I would teach a certain subject than give a quiz on that subject. I also graded both the quizzes and exams.
