Under the mentorship of Professor Lucy Gilson, I had the opportunity to learn about the history of the Western Cape’s health system. I attended a winter school programme (advanced health system’s research), which introduced me to health policy and systems research and participated, as a student, in a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) course module, health policy and planning, convened by Professor Gilson, which extended my knowledge on power theories and dynamics as well as the interactive, but complex process of developing effective public policy.
