“Low literacy is an underlying issue for underemployment, poor health, limited civic engagement, and social ills that cause significant costs to individuals and society as a whole.” ~ U.S. Department of Education: Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, 2015Cape Fear Literacy Council is a 30+ year old, independent, non-profit organization that helps adults improve their educational skills. We personalize instruction for each adult learner, providing skill books at the right level and using research-based strategies and curricula. Our greatest assets are our volunteer instructors - they are dedicated community members who go through CFLC's excellent training and then tutor one-on-one or teach small classes. CFLC provides the training, placement, materials, and support to make the student-tutor experience effective. As Executive Director, I ensure program quality, financial stability, and organizational effectiveness of this critically important non-profit. It is estimated that more than 60,000 adults in the Cape Fear region struggle with reading and understanding English. Each year, we help about 500 adults improve their educational skills through our Adult Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. We have a two-building campus in the heart of Wilmington, our budget is about $475K, and we leverage the talents of 300+ volunteers (both instructional and non-instructional) annually. Show less
