Duties include: - Preparing rock samples for chemical analysis (powdering of samples, the solvent extraction of the sediment powders, and the liquid column chemical separation of the extracts)- Assist with preparation of samples for Rock-Eval and pXRF analysis- Help develop standard operating procedures for the organic geochemistry laboratory and to train new students on how equipment works as well as how to process samples for research purposes. - Preparing sediment samples for chemical analysis (freeze-drying and powdering of samples, the solvent extraction of the sediment powders, and the liquid column chemical separation of the extracts)- Assist with the processing of sediment samples being prepared for an intact polar lipid study that seeks to find lipids associated with subsurface hydrocarbon oxidizing bacteria in Scotian Shelf seep sites.- Contribute as a coauthor to a peer-reviewed publication and present the results of that publication at a technical workshop in the spring of 2018.

Worked with the contaminated sites group to formulate and improve policies and regulations for the cleanup of contaminated sites. Responsibilities included; -Participating in ongoing implementation of the Regulations -Interacting with industry site professionals and regional inspection staff -Researching and learning about new developments in contaminated sites management to inform continuous improvement in Nova Scotia’s regulatory environment. -Prepared petrographic thin sections on slides and pucks. Used a diamond saw to cut the rocks, lapped and polished the rocks to desired thickness for thin section use -Acquired lab skills while performing micro-thermometry analyses, Raman spectrometry and using the SEM for analyzing thin sections -Created puck standards by mounting metal chips on a mount press and polished the surface -Prepared petrographic thin sections on slides and pucks.
