• Developed a new thermodynamic/kinetic model on formation/growth of solid-electrolyte interphase in conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).• Synthesized and improved the electrochemical performance of a lithium-rich layered oxide cathode material in LIBs with a solid-electrolyte based surface coating.• Revealed anode/aqueous interface reactions and their responsibilities in capacity fade/poor electrode utilization for aqueous sodium-ion batteries.• Built the relationship between defect structure and electrical properties of solid electrolyte (Li7La3Zr2O12, Li2ZrO3) materials for all-solid-state LIBs.• Improved Li7La3Zr2O12-based ceramic polymer composite solid electrolyte for all-solid-state LIBs.
