      Noting its reduced pool of applicants of color, the Department of Sociology at UC Berkeley decided to pilot a program that would recruit undergraduate students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) to craft their own original research and graduate school applications with the help of Berkeley graduate students and faculty. The mentors role incorporated planning socials, office hours, seminar sessions, and one-on-one guidance for fellows over the course of the nine-week program. Students left the program with a research prospectus, personal statement, and statement of purpose that will better prepare them for applying to top-tier programs such as Berkeley Sociology.
