Ward Van Aerschot
Wim's passion for open source software goes beyond the boundaries of his professional life. What suits Wim is that he doesn't let the quality of some open source software hold him back, instead he will hack his way around to get the most out of it :). Wim's unique way of looking at problems (sometimes measuring them from a cosmical view point :-) ) and his experience regarding the joys and pains of keeping a proven software service alive will radiate calming vibes to his peers.

When you just start out as a software developer you would hope to find someone who can serve as a role model to you in this new and bewildering field. Wim has proved to be just such a role model to me. I aspired to obtain much of the wisdom he holds along my path. And for sure I did. Wim taught me about many software engineering principles while guiding my way towards a pragmatic approach. But it doesn't end there. Being a developer is a lifestyle for me and Wim provided insights in this lifestyle, making an indelible impression. When you become sufficiently invested in your work it invariably intertwines with your personal values. Wim was always there to hold up the mirror by which to gauge my assessment of myself. And beyond that, to provide support and understanding whenever needed. He is someone who won't cease to search for value and insight. Feeling that your place in an organisation is right takes more than just having the checkboxes for the technical aspects marked. Wim assists you in finding those other considerations. I learned life lessons from him, and those can't help but translate to everything else you do. Knowing him has left me wiser, more experienced and a better person. It says something profound when you truly know you would be different if you hadn't met certain people.
