Few reporters can switch between covering brutal breaking news and writing tender human interest stories as seamlessly as Beatriz. I’ve worked with Beatriz for the better part of a decade, both as fellow reporters and for a year as her city editor. She never ceases to amaze me with her speed and accuracy. She’s often first to break news in her coverage area, with an active social media presence and following. She quickly turns around a quality story, then dives right into the next one. In the midst of those tragedies, she always finds time to write sweet stories of young people making a difference and families overcoming their circumstances. Beatriz also does great work covering immigration and cultural issues, using her experience as a Mexican-American and her fluent Spanish to find and tell stories other reporters miss. She also draws on her personal expertise to produce quality coverage of comic book festivals, superhero films and other pop-culture phenomena. Beatriz does this all with a sense of humor and a kind heart that endears her to everyone she works with. She’s a great addition to any newsroom, and I’d bet on her succeeding at anything she sets her mind to do.

Even after a decade of working with Beatriz at two separate companies, she still manages to exceed my expectations and amaze me with her storytelling passion. She's everything you could ask for in a breaking news reporter focused on crime and public safety. She's quick, accurate, captivating and finds the heart of every story she writes. She doesn't flounder under pressure and thrives in the ever changing would of journalism. During my time working with Beatriz she's been my editor, I've been her editor. We've worked together on a multitude of stories from national breaking news such as the Dec. 2, 2015 terrorist attack in San Bernardino to fun features on the pop-cultural phenomenon of Comic-Con International in San Diego. Her geeky, fun-loving personality constantly shins through in her work and to those around her despite the serious nature of the stories she's sometimes faced with. It's been a pleasure to work with her throughout the years.

I am a member of the Southern California News Group's crime and public safety team and have been called to cover breaking news San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange counties. I use a combination of social media and online reporting to help bring up-to-the-minute accurate information to readers. Our team has covered several national events including the manhunt of an ex-Los Angeles Police officer after he killed several people, the terror attacks in San Bernardino and the fatal shooting at an Inland Empire school that left a teacher and 8-year-old student dead. Drawing from my own experience as a Latina who grew up in Southern California, I have crafted stories that focus on this large but under-reported group, their community and concerns including a project which looks at quinceaneras as a form of resistance in the current political climate. I have also been part of the crack team sent to cover San Diego Comic-Con, doubling our audience for the coverage each year with stories, social media posts and online outreach focusing on local artists, organizations and attendees at the world-renowned event.
