I analysed the entanglement of landscapes, people, and politics to illuminate the range of interconnected threats that mining poses to campesinos and their landscapes. Campesinos are interrelated with their landscape through the realms of farming practices, dependencies, belonging and identity. Combining phenomenological conceptions of landscape with a political ecology analysis, I explore the lived experience of the landscape, while placing it in the local and extra-local webs of power in which mining is embedded in Tolima. My main methods were participant observation and interviews. Participant observation included a wide range of activities such as attending activist spaces and resistance practices, staying with people on their finca and farming the land, attending relevant state-organized events, travelling around the territory, and many more. I interviewed a wide range of people such as activists, farmers, a conservationist, a former employee of a mining company, and a member of the municipal government. Show less
