I have known and worked with William for approximately 3 years at Ley Choon Group Holdings Limited, a Mainboard company listed on the Stock Exchange of Singapore, where I am the Audit Committee Chairman and William was the Group CFO. The company was then undergoing a debt restructuring exercise. From my extensive discussions with William on how to deal with these challenges, I viewed William as a methodical and meticulous person. One example of William’s creative approach was his proposal for all key executives to take a pay cut to demonstrate commitment towards the debt restructuring scheme. While this proposal went against established norms, William championed the idea and demonstrated that he was careful but yet firm in what needs to be done to convince what was then a family controlled company. Subsequent to that experience, William had also overhauled the audit committee presentations, transforming complex inputs into useful datapoints on which the Board can base its decisions upon. William’s unique blend of perspectives, out-of-the box thinking and communication skills underpinned his outstanding leadership of the Finance team. William’s achievements in spearheading the restructuring of Ley Choon Group Holdings Limited as the Group CFO have been truly extraordinary. Streamlining the Group’s operations and disposing the non-core businesses faced initial resistance from the Board, but William ultimately convinced the company of its sustainable benefits. He inspired and challenged the company to think creatively and to dream bigger. His contributions to the company have made an impact, and William was honoured as the Executive of the Year (Materials & Construction Industry) by the Singapore Business Review in December 2016.
