I was set four very general but clear objectives for my Industrial placement year: 1. Integrate into the existing site team and the daily running of the site. 2. Engage with the sub-contractors on site and understand their scope of works. 3. Engage with the Consultant team and understand their scope of duties. 4. Take responsibility for several key sub contractor Packages. Before the commencement of my placement year I wasn't sure what to expect, however, I assumed that I would be shadowing Senior Management throughout a variety of sectors within the company. This was not the case at Longcross. From day one I was 'thrown into the deep end' tasked with a numerous opportunities aimed to develop my understanding and knowledge within the industry. Throughout the year I encountered a number of challenges, the main challenges were; contractor interface, programme, quality control, sequencing of activities, planning and primarily foresight. I soon learnt that the ability to foresee a problem and overcome it before any negative impacts occurred was something that required a lot of skill. Reflecting on my year I have listed a number of activities that I was involved with and summarised my greatest achievements: • Management of Packages including- Vinyl, Whiterock, fire stopping and joinery. • Issue work permits (i.e. Hot works) • Contacting Subcontractors- Organising Meetings • Site daily diary • SH&E Inspection checklist • SWMP data sheet Input • H&S checks • Inductions • Organising Structural, Architectural, Mechanical and Electrical drawings for initial review. • Chaired Pre-start Trade meetings • Bream control documentation • Labour Control and allocation • The considerate constructors scheme. • Issued and updated 'Matrix' Total Quality Management document.
