  Our company, Interstitial Systems, manufactures the energy saving TIER E/A two-tier raised floor electromechanical distribution system that delivers conditioned air through a leak-free and truly pressurized lower tier, and houses electrical services in the upper tier. Effective pressurization makes it possible to bring conditioned air directly to the equipment at the precise rate required. Providing a pressure plenum isolated from the electrical tier above almost always means that the overall floor height can be reduced and, since conditioned air does not leak through cable cut-outs, floor joints, and openings created by removed floor panels, you will never have hot spots or cold spots. The result is that the 25% (at least) energy waste that is universally acknowledged for conventional under floor air distribution is virtually eliminated. Capital costs are also reduced because with TIER E/A it is possible to use fewer but larger AHUs placed on the room's perimeter, or to switch to a design using central station air conditioners. The current universal need to save energy and growing demand for energy in data centers inspired Collier to re-enter the floor business. The needs of the industry have changed, heat loads in the 90’s were 20-40 W/sf, and today heat loads are approaching 400 W/sf. A Data Center when using TIER E/A with a properly designed HVAC system can save at least 35% of the energy required. Clearly, the market is ready and desperately in need of a product that will save huge chunks of energy. Therefore, because the needs of a Data Center have changed, Collier developed a new system to meet the requirements of the state-of-the-art, high density Data Center. After almost two years of research/design development, modeling, prototyping and testing the TIER E/A™ product is ready for the market.
